![]() Everybody has their own workflow for writing (the hard part!), and I thought I’d share the barebones pieces of mine for anybody interested in getting started. For all of these, I think there’s some degree of familiarity with programming or LaTeX that’s needed to get started. In particular, there’s some great guides from rOpenSci, packages with LaTeX templates for major publishers, and R packages to help with reproducible documents. I personally don’t mind doing this manually: the added friction in moving changes from one document to another allows me to think about the changes more, rather than simply clicking the Accept button in Word.I have to start with saying that there’s a lot of ways to write scientific articles with all of these tools. ![]() You need to copy over any changes in the word document to your Rmarkdown document. Now, the fiddly part comes when you update your document. Send the document to your collaborator, and they have your most up-to-date figures and references to comment on. At the top of the editor window, click the knit drop down and choose “ Knit to word”. Thanks to pandoc, a universal document converter, RStudio can turn your Rmarkdown document into Word documents as well as PDFs. There is an extremely simple solution to this: knit to word. But what if you want to get input from your collaborators? How to get comments from collaborators stuck in the past So you’ve written and properly referenced your paper. When knitting (ie compiling) your document to PDF, it will feature the correct references in place, and the correct bibliography at the end. Of course, you can also configure a short-cut for it. Then, if you install the citr package, you can simply click the add-in menu and insert a citation: Then, you add bibliography: /Users/jan/Documents/Zotero/better-bibtex/zotero-library.bib to the YAML pre-amble of your Rmarkdown document. bib file that you keep synchronised to your library. You need to export your Zotero library to a. ![]() Easily add citations to your documentįor references, I use the package citr alongside Zotero and the zotero plugin Better BibTeX. I just wanted to outline a workflow that has worked for me in the past. For comparison, in an editor like word, you would have had to change the code, then save the plot to file, then insert the file into word and delete the old one.īut writing in editors such as Word brings its own benefits: mainly, track changes and comments from collaborators, and integration with reference managers. When you need to change a plot - maybe from a bar graph to a violin plot at the behest of a reviewer - you just need to change the R-code that produces the plot. ![]() However, it has benefits even when writing a “one-time” 1 document such as a paper. This is often called a way to make “reproducible” reports: maybe you write the pre-ample for a monthly summary of data collected by your team once, and every month you just re-compile the Rmarkdown code and get an up to date report of the monthly results. You can write the paper, and at the position where you want to include the plot, you include the R-code that produces your plot, instead. Say you’re writing a scientific paper with a few plots in it. One of the great things about Rmarkdown is that you can integrate R-code in your manuscript. At its basic level, it follows the ideas behind all plain-to-rich text converters: that writing without having to focus on the layout of the document makes it easier to concentrate on what you want to convey, not how you are going to convey it. Rmarkdown is a syntax for writing plain text documents that get converted to rich text webpages, pdfs, word documents and presentations.

In summary, Clip Studio Paint is the ideal marriage of Adobe Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI. You cannot find a better bang for your buck anywhere. Clip Studio Paint frequently goes on sale for as little as $20. How is this program only $50? If you still can’t squeeze that into your budget, sign up for emails or keep an eye on the download page. They are posable down to individual knuckles on the fingers, all with natural ranges of motion. Yes, Clip Studio has 3D pre-rendered, weighted human figures–among other things–which you can rotate, scale, and adjust to your heart’s content. I did not, however, take the time to count the number of pre-rendered textures, patterns, manga materials (comic frame layouts,) or posable dolls. Brushwork was just the tip of the iceberg.Ĭlip Studio Paint contains 192 (yes, I counted them,) pre-rendered brush material images alone, ranging from natural-looking vegetation to a cute variety of cartoon hearts to telephone poles, which will snap to a straight line or logical perspective as best as any raster program can–nevermind the fact that I have never heard of another raster program that does that. Out of mere curiosity, I dug a little deeper to see what else Clip Studio had to offer. Ring me up, because I’m sold.īut it doesn’t end there. I managed to more precisely control blending my strokes and textures than I could in SAI, while maintaining Photoshop’s deep level of brush customization for a greater variety of shapes and textures. But 27-year-old me, who can paint, spent the next hour painting the best landscapes of my life. But that’s what Manga Studio was known for, wasn’t it? Just a bunch of glorified linework, right? 16-year-old me who couldn’t paint digitally would think so. A user can not only change the shape of the brush’s imprint, but also control the stroke’s direction, gap, scattering, density, anti-aliasing, and more, all of which can be found in the Sub Tool Detail view–accessible by clicking on the crescent wrench in the brush properties window. However, unlike SAI, it also has the customization capabilities of a Photoshop brush. Like SAI, it has multiple brush types (ink, watercolor, oil,) with different weights, opacities, blending capabilities, etc., all within their own subcategories. I spent the first hour testing the brush library presets alone. I imagined I would spend about an hour discovering how this program was inferior to both Photoshop and SAI, and be done with it. The free trial version of Clip Studio nearly equates to the fully licensed program without saving or loading, so I downloaded it. My immediate assumption was that it is only $50 for a reason, something along the lines of SAI’s limited support or lack of Photoshop-like filters. Not bad, but so does Paint Tool SAI, give or take. (All of our other game artists do, but I require the hand-eye disconnect.) However, any associate’s suggestion is worth looking into, so I decided to check it out.įirst things first, how’s the price? Clip Studio Paint sells online for $50. Wescom’s recommendation, especially since I don’t even use a Cintiq. I figured I didn’t need it, I already had the biggest, most expensive art program out there (because when you’re sixteen-years-old, cost correlates directly to quality, apparently.) I’d had no personal experience with the tools or features. I only have a vague memory of hearing second-hand reports that it was a good inking program, but that was it. Having grown up in the digital art scene, I had heard of what was known as solely Manga Studio back in the day. The pressure response on a Cintiq is greatly superior to Photoshop and the cost is much better.” “You should look into Clip Studio Paint (Manga Studio) by Smith Micro Software. And then a comment came in on our LinkedIn page from one Kirk Wescom. The feedback was largely positive and I gave myself a small pat on the back for a job well done. Listed were each of the softwares’ pros and cons, along with general prices to help inform prospective artists. ![]() ![]() Which while still having advantage on the first attack, there's still a better chance for the first attack to him compared to the second one which, I might be the bearer of an unpopular opinion but, I feel the bonus action is still better suited to be used for cunning action. But even when it comes to a non feat campaign, pre 14 scouts or the other subclasses have to decide on just attacking with advantage once from melee with a follow-up attack if needed/wanted or once from range with advantage with cunning action. I can see what you mean about the feats being the issue, like also with the skulker feat, allowing archers to remain hidden if they miss. Overall, I was just wondering what over groups have done about this, if they've done anything about it and why. After talking to one of my DMs we came up with two possible solutions so far, the first being melee sneak attacks are d8s instead of d6s or melee sneak attacks gain improved critical (crits occur at 19-20). Which don't get me wrong is a viable reason to do so, but when you have a high level scout in the party, it becomes fairly clear that getting a second attack that doesn't get sneak attack as a bonus action usually isn't worth making when they can still use their cunning action. I was just wondering what is everyone else's opinion about this because as it stands, I see no reason for a rogue to attempt a melee sneak attack other than to get a second hit to trigger sneak attack if the first attack missed. Though one thing that me and my DM noticed between all of them, is that no matter what they originally planned on focusing on for combat they all eventually ended up using ranged weapons, or questioning why the ranged sneak attacks were just as good as melee sneak attacks (cause of the risk vs reward aspect). Recently my group has had several different kinds of rogues, anywhere from a wood elf scout (archer), to a kobold assassin (dual wielding), to even changling mastermind (duelist). ![]() Instead, you’ll already have complete collections to set any atmosphere to suit the mood. If you’re constrained by storage, then FSLogix probably isn’t the profile solution for you. It’s always worth mounting the VHD(x) container offline and seeing what you can see within it if this problem manifests.Īlso be careful that no-one has gotten too creative with the redirections.xml file, which as I’ve said on many times already, is not something you should be leaning too heavily on. Obviously another cause would simply be a failure to write the files back to the container, so check that something hasn’t changed with permissions or share access. If the “other” solution gets in first and processes profile changes, you may find that there is nothing for FSLogix to copy. If you’ve Citrix UPM, Ivanti UWM, Microsoft UE-V, VMware DEM, LiquidWare, Scense or any one of the other myriad profile management solutions installed alongside FSLogix, you may want to check that the two aren’t conflicting. ![]() This can be caused by another profile management solution existing alongside FSLogix. Thanks to the clever bods over on the World of EUC Slack channel, I was quickly pointed in the right direction and resolved the issue, rather than wasting my entire afternoon troubleshooting. Either something was preventing the write-back occurring (which would be odd, given that the profile was successfully mounted in the first place), or something was emptying the profile and FSLogix was simply doing its job and replicating the empty container back to the server. When the user logged out after their first logon, I mounted their VHDX and found that it was almost completely empty, despite the fact that I’d copied a whole host of large files into it. It also deletes the corrupt profile afterwards, which seems kinda drastic, but I guess keeping a profile around that has no Registry hives isn’t much use (unless you could maybe restore them, sort of like Citrix UPM does with the “LastKnownGood” copy of the DAT file). If FSLogix encounters a profile container without any Registry settings, it does what is natural – marks the profile as corrupt and creates a new one. This is indicating that the user’s NTUSER.DAT file, which is the user’s Registry hive, simply cannot be found. I don't even know what's the purposes of updating that block state. If you were to check the FSLogix logs (which would obviously be the most sensible thing to do), you would see an error similar to that shown below Creating new user profile disk (user's registry hive was missing) (The system cannot find the file specified.)
